Story Time Art: Ms. Rubinstein’s Beauty
Here is a book that is such a beautiful reminder to not let one characteristic about another person keep us from seeing their true beauty or anything positive about them at all. So many times, we as adults, refuse to look past another person’s flaws (or odd characteristics) to find the good. I adore how this book reminds children to find the beauty in people, even when you think it’s not there or there’s something incredibly distracting keeping you from recognizing it.
BOOK
My sweet sister-in-law showed this book to my girls and I years ago. She has the best eye for awesome picture books. They got a kick out of the story and the illustrations are just so fabulous. Even though it appears this book isn’t available new, if you can get your hands on a copy, even if used from Amazon, it is WORTH IT! It’s so unique with its style and the message is too good not to share with your little ones. I love how this could also make a great add to a Valentine’s Day collection. It’s just so good.
PREP
Here is what we used:
- Face, hair and eye TEMPLATES (download mine for free) on card stock
- 12″ x 12″ red paper
- 3″ x 3″ paper squares (black, white & tan)
- 9″ x 12″ black paper
- 9″ x 12″ tan paper
- Paper plate cut in half
- Pencil
- Scissors & glue
- Red marker
- Black & red liquid tempera paint
- Medium & large round brush
- Round sponge brush
- Crayons or oil pastels (black & white)
I had the squares pre-cut along with the hair shape and eyes. My 4 year old traced and cut the oval for the face. This made the project go pretty quickly. The hair template is too difficult for my 4 year old to cut, but if your child is a little older, they could trace and cut it out also.
CREATE
Here is the video tutorial for this project:
This is what we did:
- Glue the squares to the red background.
2. Glue down the face and hair to the background.
3. Draw 2 large circles for the eyes and color in red with a marker. Glue down the eyes. Dip round sponge brush into black paint and add black dots for pupils over the red marker.
4. Add eye liner or lashes and eye brows with the black paint and smaller brush. Draw a simple curved line for the nose with the red marker or paint one with the red paint.
5. Paint the paper plate half with red paint. Set aside to dry. Go over with black and white lines to make a fan. Glue to the face.
