THE BOOK
Our God: A Shapes Primer by Danielle Hitchen & Jessica Blanchard is a stunning visual journey through Scripture focusing on helping children to identify shapes.
It is part of a their Baby Believer series of board books that my girls absolutely adore.
Yes, my one year old loves looking through the pages of this book with the bold colors and strong contrasts, but so do my three and five year olds!
My five year old daughter really loves looking at the beautiful illustrations as I share the Bible verse on each page with her. This book helps us to focus on ONE verse from Scripture and keep our children’s attention with the colorful visual representations.
And it totally had us ready to create an art project that makes a GREAT faith-based Valentine’s Day art project!
Here is a look into the book and an overview of the art project:
PREP
Here is what we used:
- 9″ x 12″ yellow paper
- White card stock for template & poster
- Kwik Stix (paint sticks)
- White & purple oil pastel
- White chalk (Crayola)
- White school glue
- Scissors
- Gold glitter paint
- Large round paint brush
- *Optional: watercolor paper for background with yellow and orange watercolors instead of yellow paper

CREATE
- Print the heart template onto card stock & cut out.
2. Flip the heart over (so the cross is on the back) and color the heart using red and pink Kwik Stix or oil pastels or crayons or markers. Set aside to dry for a few minutes while you work on the background.
3. Take the white oil pastel and make a white dot in the middle of the yellow paper. Draw radiating lines from the center dot to the edge. Then take the white chalk, turn it on its side and push the chalk over the lines all the way to the edge of the paper. (break the chalk in half for the right width)
4. Once the heart has dried a bit, carefully fold it in half and cut out the cross. My five year old did it herself but younger ones may need your help. 🙂 If some of the paint sticks and you see white areas, just color over them.
5. Glue the heart to the center of the yellow paper. Color the cross with white oil pastel and draw straight radiating lines from the cross overlapping the heart going all the way to the edge of the yellow paper.
Older children 6-8 could outline the cross with purple oil pastel and the heart to help it stand out. Up to you!
For a final touch, add some gold glitter paint to the cross and on a few of the radiating lines for some special sparkle!
